Back in 1999, Swinford villagers decided that they wished to mark the millennium by creating a children’s playground at the very heart of the village. A huge campaign to raise money was launched with lots of fundraising village events, and applications were made to many charities and funds who would award money to worthy causes. The committee of Swinford 2000 was formed to drive the project and they worked tirelessly to make the vision into reality. Although money was raised to buy the kit for the playground, it was all constructed by village sweat and muscle – and afterwards passed inspection by the appropriate authorities with flying colours.
Now the village playground forms a focal part of Swinford and is a wonderful facility for children (and parents!). Swinford 2000 continues as a charity and the committee meet regularly to ensure that the playground – and village green – are kept in good order and arrange for regular inspections, together with an annual one carried out by RoSPA. Further projects are always a possibility, if the opportunity arises. |
